How to Install a Frame Notch on a 1973-1987 GM C10
Tools Needed:
- Jack and Jack Stands
- Blocks (if lifting the bed)
- Marker and Straight Edge
- Plasma Cutter or Cutting Tool
- Grinder
- 3/8" Drill Bit
- 1/2" Drill Bit
- Wrenches and Ratchets
Step 1: Preparation
Organize all parts and hardware. Before starting the installation, make sure all the necessary components are present. Lift the truck bed off the frame. You can either use blocks to prop up the bed or remove it completely, depending on your workspace and preference.
Step 2: Position the Inner Plate
Place the inner plate inside the frame. Use a marker and straight edge to outline where the frame needs to be cut. This step is critical for ensuring that the notch fits correctly.
Step 3: Cutting the Frame
Use a plasma cutter or a suitable cutting tool to remove the section of the frame you've marked. Take your time to ensure accuracy and avoid damaging other components. Clean the cut area with a grinder to smooth out any rough edges and prepare for painting.
Step 4: Install the Notch Bracket
Insert the main notch bracket into the newly cut section of the frame. Secure it with a 1/4" black locator nut and bolt to hold it in place.
Step 5: Drill the Front Face Holes
Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill holes into the front face of the frame. Bolt each hole using 1.25" 3/8" bolts and non-nylock nuts. This will help draw the notch into the frame and keep it steady for the next steps.
Step 6: Drill Remaining Holes
Continue by drilling the top and final face holes using a 3/8" and 1/2" drill bit respectively. Once all holes are drilled, the notch should be securely fitted.
Step 7: Paint the Frame
Remove the notch and apply paint to the frame where you’ve drilled and cut. This will help prevent rust and prolong the life of your frame.
Step 8: Final Installation
Reinstall the notch bracket along with the backing plate. Secure everything with nylock nuts. Don’t forget to attach the bump stops to complete the installation.
Step 9: Passenger Side Adjustments
Repeat the above steps on the passenger side. Additionally, grind off the rivets holding the brake line in place to allow for the notch installation.
Step 10: Reassemble and Finish
Reinstall the truck bed, bolt the wheels back on, and lower the truck from the jack stands.
